About the Author

John Kulewicz grew up in a postwar suburb of Columbus, Ohio amid the optimism of the 1960s and cultural changes of the 1970s. A graduate of The Ohio State University and Yale Law School, he has practiced law and served the public for over 40 years.
A skilled attorney, Kulewicz has won cases in the U.S. Supreme Court as well as courts throughout Ohio. Outside the courtroom he has successfully led important community organizations and tough political campaigns. His lifelong love of swimming as a kid turned into a passion for endurance swimming later in life that has taken him around the world, from the Strait of Gibraltar to the English Channel and many more adventures.
He lives with his wife Maryline, in Upper Arlington where he has served on the City Council since 2020.

Praise for An Ohioan's Odyssey
"John Kulewicz understands that in life, and in politics, the toughest battles are the only ones worth fighting."
Martin O’Malley
Governor of Maryland (2007-2015) Commissioner, Social Security Administration (2023-2024)
"At home and around the globe John Kulewicz has shown what it means to 'learn the world through your feet.' Having been on the ground myself in 15 African countries and reading John’s beautiful writing, I can feel the magnificent continent almost within reach."
Tom McDonald
US Ambassador to Zimbabwe (1997-2001)
"Nobody here has ever campaigned as hard or as effectively as John Kulewicz. He is a tireless worker for the things he believes in. His ability to connect on a personal level, even with people who have very divergent views, is remarkable."
Kip Greenhill
President, Upper Arlington City Council (2017-2021)
"Time and again, as his book reflects and as I have seen in my own career, John Kulewicz has shown his deep commitment to the law as an instrument of justice and change."
Janet E. Jackson
Judge, Franklin County, Ohio (1987-1992)
"Endurance swimming is all about the willpower, determination, and courage to carry on when the body and every muscle scream 'Stop.' I say 50 percent of the achievement is down to the power of the mind. Others put it as high as 80 percent. Whatever it is, John Kulewicz has demonstrated it in abundance and it shines out from the pages of this book."

Honorary Secretary, Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation
